Red wine is produced from dark-coloured grape varieties, and it is the skin of the grapes that gives the wine its colour. Skin contact at the outset of the wine production integrates besides colour also tannins into the wine.

Tannins are the structural backbone of red wines.

The actual colour of the wine can range from intense violet, typical of young wines, through to brick red for mature wines and brown for older red wines.

Different grapes have their own characteristics and the choices made by the winemaker during vinification have a huge influence on the wine.
