Based in Premeaux, just south of Nuits-St Georges, Domaine de la Vougeraie was created in 1999 when Jean-Claude Boisset decided to group together all the vineyard holdings of the various négociant companies he had acquired over the years. Pascal Marchand was put in charge in 1999, with Bernard Zito in the vineyards, which are farmed biodynamically. Pascal produced powerful wines, fairly heavily extracted in his early vintages but clearly moving to a softer style by 2004. The wines have subsequently been made by Pierre Vincent who has maintained the more delicate approach. Top-quality vineyards continue to be added, especially Grand Cru whites in recent vintages. This is Pierre Vincent’s last vintage, as he is now installed at Domaine Leflaive.

Vougeraie is very happy with the 2016 result, another domaine call the vintage “très Bourguigonne”, meaning that the precision and purity of the fruit means this is more terroir-focused than 2015’s broader and more intense style.

A lesser known detail...

This, the Domaine’s first vineyard back in 1966, derives from Les Brosselles, which meant a patch of scrubland. This climat is ideally located in the wildest, most unpretentious part of the village. The vines are on a steep east-south-east slope, with just the right degree of calcareous soil, a dream plot...

About Domaine de la Vougeraie

The Domaine de La Vougeraie is a selection of estates acquired over time and blended with the family's own vines. Its history goes back to 1964 with Les Evocelles, the first plot to be acquired in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin.

Twenty years later, the vines of Vougeot and the first plot on the Côte de Beaune were added. 1996 brought more land around Beaune, before the loop was closed and the domaine returned to Vougeot with the addition of Le Clos Blanc, the famous monopole with its glinting gold wines.

The Domaine de la Vougeraie was created in 1999 around an entity and a name. La Vougeraie is the name of the family home, symbolizing the filiation of Jean-Claude and Claudine Boisset with their children Nathalie and Jean-Charles, who were behind the creation of the estate. It is also a nod to Vougeot, the beating heart of this estate.

Grape variety
Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is a red wine grape variety of the species Vitis vinifera. The name may also refer to wines created predominantly from Pinot Noir grapes. The name is derived from the French words for pine and black. The word pine alludes to the grape variety having tightly clustered, pine cone-shaped bunches of fruit.

Pinot Noir grapes are grown around the world, mostly in the cooler climates, and the grape is chiefly associated with the Burgundy region of France. Pinot Noir is now used to make red wines around the world, as well as Champagne, and such sparkling white wines as the Italian Franciacorta, and English sparkling wines. Regions that have gained a reputation for red pinot Noir wines include: the Willamette Valley of Oregon, the Carneros, Central Coast, Sonoma Coast and Russian River AVAs of California, the Elgin and Walker Bay wine regions of South Africa, Mornington Peninsula, Adelaide Hills, Great Southern, Tasmania and Yarra Valley in Australia and the Central Otago, Martinborough and Marlborough wine regions of New Zealand. Pinot Noir is the most-planted varietal (38%) used in sparkling wine production in Champagne and other wine regions.

Pinot Noir is a difficult variety to cultivate and transform into wine. The grape's tendency to produce tightly packed clusters makes it susceptible to several viticultural hazards involving rot that require diligent canopy management. The thin skins and low levels of phenolic compounds lends pinot to producing mostly lightly coloured, medium-bodied and low-tannin wines that can often go through phases of uneven and unpredictable aging. When young, wines made from Pinot Noir tend to have red fruit aromas of cherries, raspberries and strawberries. As the wine ages, pinot has the potential to develop more vegetal and "barnyard" aromas that can contribute to the complexity of the wine.

About Gevrey-Chambertin

Gevrey-Chambertin – a village in Burgundy's Côte de Nuits district – produces some of the world's most prestigious and expensive red wines. The village is home to nine grand cru vineyards, comfortably more than any other Burgundy village. Eight of these feature "Chambertin" somewhere in their name, in homage to the most respected among them: Chambertin Grand Cru.

The village was originally called just Gevrey, but in 1847 the parish council added the name of the most prestigious local vineyard, Le Chambertin. This started a trend that ran the length of the Côte d'Or, right down to the "Montrachets" (Puligny and Chassagne) in the south. There are now 11 Côte d'Or villages whose names refer to their most prestigious vineyard site.

The Gevrey-Chambertin appellation covers more than 2 million bottles of wine per vintage. This figure includes all premier cru wines, but not the grand cru wines, which have their own separate appellations.
